Eczema Relief

Child with Eczema

Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition marked by itching, redness and scaly patches. It usually appears on your baby’s face, chest, back, arms or legs during the first 6 months, and it can last throughout childhood. It can be tough to deal with, but you may be surprised at how many treatment options you have. Check out these practical tips for living with - and treating - eczema.

Did You Know?

Eczema can evolve over time, meaning that treatments that worked in the past can suddenly stop being as effective. It’s important that parents don’t stop searching for remedies, even when their child’s condition seems under control.

Watch What Your Child Eats

Certain foods can aggravate eczema, so it’s a good idea to eliminate them from your child’s diet in order to pinpoint the trigger. Some common culprits include dairy and red meat, wheat flour, nuts and tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple.

Socks!

Slip On Socks!

Many young children can’t help scratching their skin at night. Slipping socks or gloves onto your child’s hands before bed is a great trick to prevent this.

Check your shower

Bathing in chlorinated tap water strips the skin of its natural oils and can cause itching and scaling—not what you want when you’re already battling dry, uncomfortable skin! Using a shower filter to remove chlorine can be helpful in preventing further irritation.

Limit Heat

Eczema has a tendency to flare up when it’s hot, but some experts believe the underlying cause may be food allergies. Some children can handle food triggers when it’s cool outside, but unable to control them when it becomes hot. Limit these trigger foods and try to keep your child from overheating.

Did You Know?

A recent study found that newborns who share a home with a pet cat may be more likely to develop eczema as infants than other babies. The study showed that babies exposed to cats shortly after birth had higher rates of eczema at age 1 than babies who lived in homes without cats. On the other hand, owning two or more dogs was associated with lower rates of eczema.

Consider Homeopathy

Seeing a homeopathic doctor can be very helpful if you’re having trouble treating your child’s condition. She may be able to recommend a treatment that addresses his specific needs. For instance, some children experience itching and burning that is only soothed by applying something hot, while others complain of symptoms that require cool compresses. With over 600 homeopathic remedies at your doctor’s disposal, you’ve got a good shot at finding a treatment that works.

Eczema Products

Note from Jessica, owner of California Baby: “I’ve had spots of eczema myself—I think we all have at one point—so I understand the feeling of helplessness and the urgency to cure it. Customers always ask me which cream to buy for their child’s eczema, but I always tell them that they need to try all of our creams. Not because I’m trying get them to buy more of our products, but because each person is different and what works for one person may be not be as helpful to another. That’s why we at California Baby put together an eczema sampler pack, a selection of products tested and approved by real customers. This is a low cost way to try all the products and find out which ones work best for you.”
